Joe Elder, President
Joe Elder is a Professor of Sociology and of Languages and Cultures of Asia in the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1969 Joe traveled to Hanoi twice on  behalf of the American Friends (Quakers) Service Committee to deliver medical supplies to civilians in North Vietnam. On one of those trips he visited the AFSC hospital and prosthetic center in Quang Ngai. In the 1990s Joe helped found Madison Quakers, Inc., and since 2000 he has visited Quang Ngai several times.
 

Jim Huberty, Treasurer
Jim Huberty has earned both BA and MS degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is currently working in Office Management and Accounting in Middleton, and enjoys tutoring middle and high school students. Jim is also an advocate for NAMI (National Alliance for Mental Illness).

Rick Burnson, Vice President
Rick Burnson recently retired from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught in the ESL program for 25 years.  His 34 years of teaching included time in Austria, South Korea and at the University of Illinois.  His current focus is to help support and improve English as a Foreign Language teaching in the Quang Ngai province in Vietnam.

Gil Halsted, Secretary
Gil Halsted is a news reporter for Wisconsin Public Radio. He has visited Vietnam three times both to report and to visit MQI projects in Quang Ngai. He spent ten years as a social worker and then English teacher in Bangladesh, Washington DC, India, Florida and Wisconsin. His interest and commitment to peace and reconciliation in Vietnam began in the late 1960's. After college and a two-year stint as a volunteer in Bangladesh, he worked for 2 years with Vietnamese refugee teenagers at a group home in Washington D.C.
 

Cristina Bain, Member at Large
Cristina is a graduate student in Sociology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Cristina has been studying Vietnam since 2006, including research trips to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and most recently Quang Ngai. Her Masters thesis examines the inclusion of identity in structural-organizational analysis, using Madison Quakers, Inc. as a case study. Additional interests include the implications of global economic policies and development NGOs in Southeast Asia, and the growth of subsequent market-based solutions to social issues, specifically those geared towards women.
